Waiting

In 2012, I spent over 10 days following the mullet fishing season in Barra da Lagoa, Florianópolis (Santa Catarina), hoping to document the intense activity of the fishermen during that year—a period of great social and economic importance for the entire island.
It turned out to be one of the worst seasons the fishermen could recall; the large schools of mullet that typically migrate along the coast stayed far offshore, beyond the reach of the small fishing boats. This experience revealed just how fragile this livelihood is, given its total dependence on nature—yet it also showed how hope drives these men to head out to sea every single day, in search of a promising catch.
